Introduction

FSSAI Registration & Licence is a compulsory statutory requirement for all Food Business Operators (FBOs) involved in the manufacturing, processing, packing, storage, distribution, transportation, import, export, or sale of food products in India. It is issued under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, to ensure that food consumed by the public is safe, hygienic, and of prescribed quality.
Depending on the annual turnover, scale of operations, nature of food activity, and geographical coverage, an FBO is required to obtain one of the following:
  • Basic FSSAI Registration – for small food businesses
  • State FSSAI Licence – issued by the State Food Safety Authority for medium-sized businesses operating within one state
  • Central FSSAI Licence – issued by the Central FSSAI Authority for large businesses, importers, exporters, or multi-state operations
Operating a food business without the appropriate FSSAI approval is a punishable offence and may result in heavy penalties, suspension, or closure of business.
